Chargeable Wi-Fi Vs Mobile internet (3G)
Wi-Fi uses a small box connected to a fixed broadband internet line. This box can connect multiple users wirelessly at the same time using different devices, e.g. a laptop, Smartphone and tablet PC. Speed is dependent on the broadband line coming in. Average for ADSL (BT) line internet is around 12mbps and is very reliable. This can go up to 100mbps if using virgin media new service.
Mobile Internet (3G) uses the mobile phone network to connect the mobile phone to the internet. As with making a telephone call, signal is all important, you must be within range of the transmitter to make a call and even closer to connect to the internet at a useable speed. Currently 3G and the more popular 3G+ connect up to 7mbps. On average the actual speed is around 2mbps. Town centres are faster than rural areas but town centres can also be oversubscribed, as each mast has a limit on how many can connect to the internet at fast speeds.
When you are lucky enough to connect at a fast speed you are generally limited to 500 megabytes a month. This is just over 2hrs of standard definition video being streamed from the BBC iplayer. Not even a week’s work of Eastenders or a feature film in a month.
The way in which we all use the internet is changing. We are now more bandwidth hungry with the likes of Facebook & YouTube becoming the norm.
PC and console gaming is getting bigger and bigger all the time and using a 3G connection is unsuitable. Only a good quality wifi system will get you on line gaming.
Using a very reliable mesh network makes wifi a must have in caravan sites, hotels and campsites.
It’s a scalable solution, it can cover a single room, rooms over multiple floors or it can cover a huge field. A mesh network takes specialists setup but once up and running takes no maintenance for the operators. In a mesh network if one of the small routers has a problem all the other routers take over meaning the network stays alive. An error email is sent to me and the problem is resolved. Normally something as simple as it being unplugged to do the hovering in the office! On all other networks if one box is unplugged the entire network dies. Not with this system though….
I believe as long as you offer your customers a good value chargeable wifi service they will remain happy. 3G doesn’t really cut it in this day and age and quite a lot of places have free wifi, but its normally rubbish and extremely slow, no one will complain because is free, but ask the people to pay a small charge for a fast connection and they will.
£5 an hour is a rip off and that’s why it has a bad name. I believe £5 a day is better value for money especially when you can watch internet TV and movies. Perhaps £10 for a long weekend and £25 a month for permanent residents. The prices are fully adjustable to the location where the system is installed and I will discuss in full, your requirements. It can be adjusted to suit the time of year as well without any costs to you the site owner.
